This Week's Counter: North Main Diner (Chagrin Falls)

We try pretty hard not to repeat going to counters, and definitely not blogging about them more than once -- just to keep adding to our running total of different ones we've visited. North Main Diner, new in Chagrin Falls, was a little bit questionable since it's the rebranding of a counter we've done before.  It was the Fresh Start in Chagrin, but is now under new management, with a new name and a new menu.  We considered that to be different enough that we'd count it as a new counter, so we stopped in last Sunday morning.

The inside of the place looks the same for the most part, although less cluttered behind the counter, and none of the numerous specials that the old place used to post on the walls.  We easily got seats at the counter, even though it was pretty busy with the late-morning breakfast crowd.  Service was more or less the same (and the wait staff included some of the same faces we remembered from before) -- generally very friendly and helpful, although possibly a bit shorthanded, so you have to make an effort to get their attention sometimes.

The menu is a lot smaller than Fresh Start had, but still a good range of selections. Including some new and semi-unique things.  For example, Cam had the waffle breakfast sandwich -- eggs and bacon between quarters of a large waffle.  Ted went with the veggie omelette and fruit.  And we had Bradley with us -- he had eggs, bacon and hash browns (which he ordered well-done -- the new owner told us they used the deep fryer, and they were excellent).  All around, quality of food was great -- not at all greasy, cooked perfectly, and in general better than our experiences under the old management.  In particular, the coffee has been upgraded significantly.

While we still like Yours Truly for consistent, good quality and great service, we highly recommend this place as a great alternative for a good breakfast in Chagrin.  We hope the new owners are successful, as the town needs at least a couple places competing for  diner-type business.

Cam says: "No major change from old restaurant, except for the menu. Great new menu items that are a bit outside the box. With a still-comfortable counter and great service, I'll give it 8 frying pans."

Ted says: "Liked it a lot better than the prior format -- food was great, and coffee was much better. Could emphasize attentiveness a bit more. But all around good enough for 8 frying pans."

Bradley says: "Eggs were a little over-cooked, but other than that everything was great. The hash browns were exceptions. 8 frying pans."

This Week's Counter: Washington Street Diner

Another busy few weeks, but now we're back with another counter review.  This week's counter is Washington Street Diner in Bainbridge (just East of Chagrin Falls).  We never knew this place existed -- never noticed it despite being out that way from time to time.  We stopped in on Sunday morning and immediately got a couple seats at the small counter.  Very comfortable with plenty of space to read the paper.  Service was pretty fast and friendly. Cam selected the "Taste of Belgium" -- half a waffle with eggs and bacon. He said the waffle was excellent -- crisp on the outside and soft inside.  Apparently the bacon was good too, as he ordered more.  Ted went with his usual which was appropriately called "The Usual" on the menu -- eggs, potatoes and toast.  The home fries were excellent.  We liked this place a lot since it had a more relaxed feel than some of the other counters we've visited -- despite being pretty busy, we didn't feel at all rushed.  We recommend this one!

Cam says: "AMAZING waffle.  Incredible crispy bacon.  Eggs were just OK.  Service was good. Too bad they don't have WiFi.  I give this counter 4 frying pans."

Ted says: "Really enjoyable experience and a good meal.  Maybe the best home fries I've had so far. Good quality, inexpensive, friendly and relaxed. A strong 4 frying pan score from me."

This Week's Counter: Fresh Start, Chagrin Falls

Today we visited the Fresh Start Diner in Chagrin Falls. Located right on Main St. in the center of the village, Fresh Start has the feel of an old-style, small town restaurant. It was busy, but not overly crowded - there was plenty of space at the counter. This place has great service - seemed like there were as many waitresses as tables! Friendly too - the owner was chatting with many customers. The counter was spacious - lots of room for reading the paper while eating. The menu is pretty extensive - lots of flavors of pancakes and waffles, which you don't see too often. Since it was late morning, Cam went for chicken fingers and fries. Ted stuck with his usual breakfast - eggs, toast, potatoes and coffee. We thought the food was great - very tasty and prepared as we had ordered it.

Cam says: "Flavorful chicken, at a great place to eat. I give this counter 4 frying pans."

Ted says: "I liked this place. Good food, service and atmosphere. The only flaw was the quality of the coffee - kind of weak.  I'm going to rate this counter 4 frying pans."
