This Week's Counter: The Coffee Cup

Ran into some friends the other night, and they recommended a counter on the East side that we hadn't heard about -- The Coffee Cup in Bedford.  So on Sunday morning we decided to give it a try, along with guest reviewers Tami and cousin/nephew Logan.

The Coffee Cup is on Broadway near the center of Bedford -- actually an area of the city we've never been to before.  The historic town center, with some very old buildings, is right nearby.  The rest of Bedford is not too attractive, so it was nice to get a different perspective on it.

With four of us, we didn't know if we'd even get seats at the counter.  But The Coffee Cup has a very large one and it was completely empty.  Immediately after sitting down we were greeted by the friendliest of waitresses, got us drinks and took our orders quickly.

The menu for breakfast is large -- lots of different egg, pancake and French toast options, plus a lot more.  Cam went with a large Belgian waffle and bacon, Ted had his usual, and Tami and Logan chose omelettes.  The egg dishes all came with excellent potatoes -- this was the standout part of the meal.  Everything else was good, although the coffee could have been better given it's the namesake of the restaurant.

Overall, a great counter and a great breakfast.  Make the drive down to Bedford to visit The Coffee Cup if you want a quick, friendly and good meal.

Logan says: "I thought the service was good and the food was great.  Counter was great because of the spinny chairs.  I give it 8 frying pans"

Tami says: "A pleasant surprise!  Roomy counter, friendly waitress and food was good (not great).  It was fun being a guest at the counter this weekend!  7 frying pans."

Cam says: " very comfortable counter with great service.  Delicious waffle and bacon. Modernized old fashioned atmosphere.  I give this one 8 frying pans"

Ted says: "Really enjoyed this place -- very nice counter, friendly service (could have been more attentive though), and above-average food - it gets a solid 7 frying pans from me. "

This Week's Counter: The Coffee Pot

Another trip to the West side -- back to Lakewood to visit The Coffee Pot on Madison Ave. This one comes highly recommended by lots of on-line reviews, where it's touted as one of the best breakfast spots in the area.

The Coffee Pot occupies a small storefront and looks pretty basic.  It has maybe 10 tables plus a counter -- nothing fancy at all, a pretty typical diner atmosphere.  When we got there it was jammed with the Saturday morning breakfast crowd, but people were kind enough to move over and make 2 spots for us at the counter.

Service was very friendly and the menu had many different breakfast options -- from the basics to omelettes to various kinds of pancakes and French toast.  A handwritten sign on the wall described "The Hangover Special" -- a combination of eggs, meat, potatoes and toast.  Since it was too early for lunch and we didn't see chicken tenders on the list, Cam picked French toast, eggs and bacon.  Ted had the usual, eggs, potatoes and toast, plus bacon.

We waited maybe a half-hour or more for the food -- surprising as the crowd was slowing down post-breakfast time. This got to be really frustrating, but turned out to be well worth it -- everything was cooked perfectly and was delicious.  Some of the best breakfast food we've had.  The critical pieces -- potatoes and bacon -- were prepared exactly as ordered and outstanding.

The Coffee Pot gets a strong recommendation from us -- must-try place, and worth the drive West for any East-siders looking to visit a different part of town.

Cam says: "A small place with a comfortable counter.  Amazing food and great service!  I give it 8 frying pans."

Ted says: "All around excellent, with the exception of food coming out slowly. That's the only thing keeping it from a perfect score -- 9 frying pans!"
